Week 1- New Idea

Nobody wears watches anymore, if you really want to know the time, you'll most likely spend a good few minutes fumbling in your bag (if you're a female) for your mobile device, or even worse, spend an inordinate amount of time trying to extract it from those incredibly tight skinny jeans you're probably wearing as you read this. So what's the solution? Digital watches are, pardon my french, cheap as hell quite honestly. Don't expect to get many girls wearing one of those, no matter how fancy it may appear. But wait, there are the old fashioned analog watches, those still exist right? Well as a fashion statement, sure, but not many people these days can quickly tell time with one of those. I personally own one of those fancy fossil watches that makes everybody ooh and ahh, but the funny thing is, it doesn't even work properly, go figure.
So you want something that looks stylish and is also functionable, who doesn't? Well nowadays, stylish = internet connectivity, so if you do the math, you get one of the more useful creations to be put forth in a while (certainly more useful than say, the slap chop). That's right, a watch that connects you to the greatest database of human knowledge ever known, or more precisely the internet for short. Imagine looking at your wrist and being able to tell the weather, temperature, traffic, and most importantly, who just poked you on Facebook. Now this won't be replacing your phone, because having a full keyboard strapped to your wrist all day would just be plain stupid, and unsightly. Instead a touchscreen would be incorporated, because, well, as the iPhone has proven, everybody likes to touch stuff.
Now I'm sure I have all of your attention, as you sit back and realize what a game changing device I just presented to you. And you probably thought I was going to think of something stupid, like internet enabled braces. However, don't get too excited yet, the true functionality and power of this device hasn't even come close to being revealed yet, we don't even know what it's called for pete's sake. So I guess that means if you want to know more, you're going to have to stick with me for a few short weeks to learn all you can about what will probably end up being called the iWatch when Apple gets their hands on the idea... but no promises yet.

  1. I guess i am one of the old timers that still wears an analog watch, but you're right, almost no one else does. I think this product would all be about the design. If people are going to make the move back to wearing something like this they are going to want it to match with their outfit and fit their needs. If you get the time, don't hesitate to throw a sketch of the idea up on the blog.

  2. Mike,

This is an interesting idea. As with most other trends, it might take a while to become popular. How large a screen would the device have? I'm wondering how practical it would be in reality, as I'm not sure users would really want a large screen device on their wrist. If you promoted the product in effective ways (perhaps commercials on TV, a YouTube channel, Facebook page, etc.) you might be able to attract the right type of crowd to popularize your concept.

If your product could offer an advantage over the smart phones that prevail in today's world, I think it could revolutionize the way people tell time. Good entrepreneurial thinking!
